Project Description
The Berlin-based ice cream manufacturer Florida Eis is constantly striving to optimize its production and logistics in the interest of environmental sustainability. One key component of this effort is demand-driven route planning for its delivery fleet. This helps reduce the number of trips – and consequently, resource consumption and emissions.
We took on this challenge as part of a collaborative project. The goal of the project was to implement automated and accurate inventory monitoring for Florida freezers in supermarkets and to enable real-time exchange of inventory data between the smart freezers, a central database, and the Florida merchandise management system.
To monitor inventory, an RFID-based solution was developed and tested in several prototypes. All products were equipped with RFID tags, and the smart storage units were fitted with corresponding RFID receivers. This technology was configured so that even large quantities of products inside the storage unit could be reliably detected.
Control electronics were designed to handle the complex logic involved in detection, evaluation, and communication, and these were installed in the chests along with a compact minicomputer equipped with a mobile data connection.
A true IoT solution!
